Analog to Digital Audio Converter

Whether you’re preserving your vinyl collection digitally or recording audio to a digital format, an Analog to Digital Converter (ADC) is the component that takes the analog sound waves and converts them into digital files. The quality of the analog to digital audio converter directly affects the quality of the digital audio that is produced so it is very important to find the right model for you. Here at Ciamara, we believe in providing the highest quality of service to help ensure that each and every client gets exactly what he/she wants out of a component, and an Analog to Digital Audio Converter is no exception. We compiled a few of our experts’ favorite ADCs to provide a great starting point when deciding which one is right for you:

M2Tech Joplin MkIIThe M2Tech Joplin MkII is a high performance A/D converter capable of handing up to 384kHz sampling rates and 32 bits resolution (USB output). It features a high speed asynchronous USB input based on the hiFace Two technology, further developed to allow for higher sampling rates. A comprehensive output set (S/PDIF on RCA, AES/EBU on XLR and optical on Toslink) provide great connection versatility. An auxiliary S/PDIF digital input on RCA allows for re-using the digital connection used for the Joplin for a digital source, as well as for rerouting the output from a digital source to a computer which is not provided with an S/PDIF input is also an available feature.  The Joplin MkII also offer a comprehensive set of equalization curves that can be selected, to accommodate all phono formats ever used from 1925 to the present day. The equalizer’s digital gain allows for using cartridges with output voltage as low as 100uV. The user also has a number of input impedance values thaty can accomodate both MM and MC cartridges, with an extra value specific for high output MC’s. The small size and stylish look of the Joplin allow for a uninvasive placement in every living space.

Lynx Studio Technology completely reengineered the two-channel converter format with

The Hilo Reference A/D D/A Converter System. The innovative features and control implemented in this stunning 4-in-1 audio converter unit have made it an industry favorite that produces unmatched audio quality. Hilo is a unique component that cannot even compare to other two channel AD and DA converters that does the work of three different, yet crucial components. Not only is it an analog to digital audio converter, but it is also a digital to analog converter as well- most companies produce these as two separate units. Hilo is also an independent headphone amp. The headphone section has its own, dedicated D/A converter that allows Hilo to offer a headphone output with exceptional clarity and noise specifications. Additionally, the internal 32 channel mixer allows any input set to be routed to the headphone stereo output. This means that the headphones can offer a mix that is entirely different from the analog outputs and monitors. The features of Hilo’s amazing headphone section alone rival dedicated headphone amplifiers which generally cost $1500 or more. The flexible digital I/O section offers the choice of AES/EBU, SPDIF by coax or TOSLINK optical, or ADAT formats, providing innovative control, routing, and signal processing capabilities. The line in A/D performance includes a THD+N -114dB @1kHz, -1dBFS, 20kHz filter, Dynamic Range 121 dB, A-weighted, -60dBFS signal method, Frequency Resp. ± 0.01 dB, 20 – 20kHz, and Crosstalk -140 dB maximum @ 1kHz, -1dBFS signal. The line out D/A performance provides THD+N -109dB @1kHz, -1dBFS, 20kHz filter, Dynamic Range 121 dB, A- weighted, -60dBFS signal method, Frequency Resp. ± 0.02 dB, 20 – 20kHz, with Crosstalk -135 dB maximum @ 1kHz, -1dBFS signal. Hilo has 12 total inputs and 16 total outputs plus 32 channels made possible via LSlot. Furthermore, Hilo is equipped with open-ended software for future measurement, metering, diagnostic and personalization features, accessible via its touch screen LCD. It is AC powered with a battery operation also made available. Hilo now has Thunderbolt connectivity, which allows the use of up to six Lynx converters on a single Thunderbolt port on MAC or PC. Simply put, Lynx went all out while designing Hilo by providing the pristine, open, and transparent audio quality that Lynx is well known to create.

Lavry Engineering’s AD11 Analog to Digital Converter and USB Interface offers USB connectivity, which makes it perfect for archiving your vinyl and recording just as well. The AD11 includes built-in microphone preamps with phantom power, huge wide-range LED meters, and Lavry’s exclusive “Soft Saturation”, which is a digital tape saturation emulation with peak level control for hotter recordings.  With the ability to accept -10 consumer level inputs common to most HiFi preamplifiers and phono preamplifiers and easily adjust the gain for level variations between disks, makes the AD11 an excellent choice for archiving vinyl. Settings are all controllable from the front panel utilizing a system similar to the one found in the AD11’s counterpart D to A converter, the DA11. Combining pure musicality with functionality that out performs other stand-alone units in its price range, this single unit advances Lavry’s well known reputation of manufacturing the most accurate and reliable AD converters available. The AD11’s no-compromise design provides exceptional value at a price that is affordable. The USB output is available in parallel, offering both XLR and RCA AES/SPDIF digital audio outputs so that multiple recording or monitoring devices to be fed directly from the AD converter. For dual-mono operation, the MicPre or +4dBu/-10dBV line level input function and phantom power, along with Soft Saturation, are all selectable on each channel. Similar to the previous LavryBlack model AD10, the AD11 includes “XLR-TRS combo jacks” for the analog inputs. When either a balanced or unbalanced ¼” plug is inserted, 12 dB’s of fixed gain is automatically added to the front panel adjustable gain, in order to boost “-10dBV” consumer level signals to the “+4dBu” professional level. Front panel line level input gain adjustment for each channel is available in 12 precise one dB steps, and additional gain in the 20 to 65 dB’s range is provided for balanced low-impedance sources, which are generally microphones. This makes it possible to record the “direct” signal from a guitar effects unit or keyboard at the same time as a vocal mic, using only the AD11 and a laptop! Supplementing the “dual monaural” recording, incredibly precise matching between the channels allows the AD11 to perform equally well with high quality stereo Mastering applications as with “true” stereo recording. The AD11 is an amazing Analog to Digital Audio converter whether at home, at a professional studio, or even on location and will not only do the job, but will impress in a way that confirms Lavry Engineering’s reputation of excellence.
